Choosing the color for your plantation shutters can be as easy as knowing what type of shutter you need, or as open ended as your imagination. If you are using a polywood composite or synthetic shutter you are limited to white or off white but with real wood shutters any color is available. So, what to choose?
Polywood Shutters
If you are installing shutters in a bathroom, basement or other area where moisture or extreme temperatures are an issue, you will need to use polywood composite or synthetic shutters. These shutters, such as Hunter Douglas NewStyle or PalmBeach are only available in white or off white colors. These shutters are more durable and built to resist cracking, warping, and fading. A window blinds professional can help you decide which type shutter is best for your home.
Real Wood Shutters
If you go with real wood shutters, like Hunter Douglas Heritance, the sky is the limit on what color you can choose.Traditional wisdom will tell you to match your plantation shutters to the trim; however, with today’s bold colors in trim you may choose to go with a classic white or off white instead. You have to decide how often you will change your décor. If you change often, then it is possible your shutters will outlast the trim color. White gives contrast to walls and makes the woodwork pop. If you wish to be more adventuresome, you can paint or stain real wood shutters in any color imaginable, even using a metallic finish for more contemporary looks.
Shutters are usually mounted in frames that attach directly to the window casing. The frame is the surface to mount the shutter panels, and usually blends in so well with the window frame that it’s hard to tell where the window casing ends and the shutter begins.
Plantation Shutters are usually built to appear as part of the window. Therefore, matching the shutters to the casing color is ideal. If you plan to use a different trim color than the shutter, this can give a crisper contrasting look, but not usually recommended by experts. This option may be reserved for those with a good eye for inventive decorating or those that like something different. Make sure in this case that you paint the trim before the shutters are installed. It is difficult to change the paint on shutters once they are installed, because hand painting with a brush usually results in a poor quality, inconsistent finish. Most shutters are factory painted with a sprayer to ensure evenly applied paint.
Stained Shutters
In addition to painted shutters, staining shutters is also an excellent choice, especially when you have wood stained trim. Stained shutters are constructed from a wide grained hardwood called basswood and are generally slightly more expensive than painted shutters. Rooms that have a lot of wood trim, such as traditional formal living and dining rooms, should have shutters stained to match the color of the trim as closely as possible. Do not expect the stain colors to be exactly the same as there is always variation in wood stain and this is considered normal and part of the beauty of wood stain. As long as shutter stain is in the same color family all is well.
